  • 13,900,000 people have died of AIDS (est.) worldwide
  • It is estimated that there are 33,400,000 people infected with HIV. 1,200,000 are children under 15.
  • In 1998, over 5,800,000 people were infected with HIV. That's 16,000 each day. 11 people every minute become HIV- positive
 
  • In the last 18 years, 410,800 people have died of AIDS in the U.S.
  • As of December 1998, 688,197 cases of AIDS had been reported in the United States.
  • 570,425 were male.
  • 109,311 were female.
  • 8,461 were children under 13 years old.
  • Caucasians accounted for 44% of AIDS cases, African- Americans 37%, Latinos 18%, Asian/Pacific Islander and Native Americans each less than 1%.

  • 38,810 AIDS cases were reported by December 31, 1998 - up 1,843 cases from 1997. This accounts for 35% of the total number of statewide AIDS cases (110,120) and 6& of national AIDS Cases. L.A. is currently second only to New York City in reported AIDS cases
  • An estimated 32,000 - 45,000 county residents are currently living with HIV infection (HIV Epidemiology Program, L.A. County Dept. of Health Services)
  • In L.A. County, gay and bisexual men account for:
    • 65% of all reported Caucasion AIDS cases
    • 56% of all reported African-American AIDS cases
    • 48% of all reported Latino AIDS cases.
  • The incidence of AIDS cases in Los Angeles County is highest in Hollywood where many people living with advanced HIV disease account for 25% of the County's total. Many of these people access support services provided by the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, located in the heart of Hollywood.
